What are the next steps?
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE SCENE?
Tear gas, also called CS gas, is sometimes used in homes or businesses by law enforcement officers to subdue violent individuals. Unfortunately, this results in dangerous residue left on and around the property. Long-term exposure can cause symptoms to recur and worsen, and are especially damaging to persons with COPD or other respiratory problems. For this reason, no one should enter a structure containing tear gas until a highly trained and experienced tear gas cleanup specialist safely remediates the facility.
WHY HIRE A BIOHAZARD CLEANING COMPANY FOR TEAR GAS TREATMENT?
Tear gas is not easy to clean. The tear gas particles themselves are like fine talcum powder, and given its purpose, it gets everywhere. Every inch of the property needs to be decontaminated and thoroughly cleaned with special chemicals. You also need the proper protective gear when working with tear gas, since it irritates the mucous membranes of the eyes and upper respiratory tract, causing coughing, choking, and general debility. The chemical composition of tear gas makes it impossible for anyone to withstand its effects. The only drawback is, it never diminishes. Tear gas cleanup needs to be performed by a company trained in the proper techniques and solutions which neutralize the irritants.
WHAT IS TEAR GAS CLEANUP?
Generally, the biggest challenge in tear gas remediation is how to control cross-contamination, but every situation is different depending on the amount of tear gas used and the size of the structure as well as if any biohazard exists.
Because tear gas is launched in the form of grenades or aerosol cans making the liquid an aerosol, its cleanup requires specific technical steps to be taken in order to effectively remediate the residue and air space left behind after its discharge. Tear gas is complicated to remove as it is developed to disperse and stick to surfaces. After the initial dispersion, the tear gas settles on all horizontal surfaces.
Although the effects of tear gas on your body are temporary, the effects of tear gas on your home or property aren’t temporary. The tear gas chemicals seep into furniture, fabric, and other porous materials, the canisters can also break windows and puncture drywall and ceilings. Allowing tear gas to fill up the voids behind drywall and since tear gas is dispersed in a gaseous state it will get into the ventilation system, compounding the contamination of your property.
